Hawkinson wipes the floor with William Petersen in ‘Blackbird’
Mattie Hawkinson (Una) confronts William Petersen (Ray) about a sexual affair they had 15 years ago.
William Petersen fans beware, ‘Blackbird’ is a long way from ‘CSI’ (posted July 5)
In the new Victory Gardens production of David Harrower’s harrowing “Blackbird,” a Chicago actress named Mattie Hawkinson wipes the floor with William Petersen, star of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and the name above the title on the infamous Biograph Theatre marquee.
Actually, that doesn’t adequately describe it. …

Blackbird, It’s Complicated
He’s not just a pedophile, and she’s not just his victim.
The first thing you hear in Victory Gardens Theater’s Blackbird is the sound of an acoustic guitar—a gentle prelude to the fireworks to come. There’s no vocal, but the song—Paul McCartney’s “Blackbird,” from the Beatles’ 1968 White Album—is instantly recognizable, and its words float in your head: “Blackbird singing in the dead of night / Take these broken wings and learn to fly . . . into the light of the dark black night.”
Una and Ray, the principal …

A tale of two great actors, the human factor, and a humdinger twist.
Case in point: An incident at Trattoria Gianni in Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre district Wednesday night involving actors William “CSI” Petersen and John …

Endgame

By:  Samuel Beckett

Directed by:  Frank Galati

Steppenwolf’s engaging production of Endgame finds comedy in despair.

The work of Samuel Beckett is something that has always intrigued and frustrated me at the same time, and the play Endgame is no exception.  My first experience with this play was a poorly done recording which made the play seem empty, boring, and soulless.  The second time I saw it was in Bulgaria (in Bulgarian), and although it was a fine performance I could not understand any of the dialogue.  This third trip into …

BY HEDY WEISS Theater Critic
Playwright Samuel Beckett specialized in gazing into the void. A great literary undertaker in the blackly comic tradition of a long line of Irish writers, he set himself apart from the rest by ruthlessly stripping away all the decorative niceties of existence and suggesting that in the final analysis (and it always is “final”), life might well be completely meaningless.
In fact, if you take Beckett at face value, he didn’t see much difference between life and death. The former was just one painful step in …

By Bill Keveney, USA TODAY
William Petersen picked the cafe for its quality.
Complex man: William Petersen, in CSI’s autopsy room, says he’s healthier since he “stopped fighting for everything.”
“This is the worst of the coffee places on the block. The others are crammed. Nobody likes (this place), so it’s great,” he says.
Not so great if you’re a coffee lover. Quite appealing if you’re the lead star of CSI (tonight, 9 ET/PT) and are used to attention at airports, Las Vegas casinos and even the neighborhood drugstore, where moments earlier he signed …

A real reality show
William Petersen, star of CBS’ surprise hit series “CSI”, seeks ultimate truths in some unseemly places.
By Jeffrey Zaslow
The “X-Files” became a cult hit in the ’90s by reminding TV viewers that “the truth is out there.” For the new millennium, actor William Petersen has another motto: “The truth is in there.”
In the crime lab, that is. On “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”, the surprise hit CBS drama (Thursdays, 9 p.m. ET) that’s up for the Golden Globe for best TV drama series this weekend, …
